SUMMARY: Introduction. Cleft lip and palate is the most common facial deformity (CLP). It may involve the lips only, the lips with the jaw and palate, or just the palate. The main aetiological factors for clefts in infants can be either environmental (such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet, etc.), or genetic factors (such as family factors and chromosomes).
Material and Method. The data of the study derives from the patients of the 1st Hellenic Cleft Center, and their comparison with the international literature. A number of medical specialists is involved in the treatment of clefts, where they determine the best treatment plan based on the location of the defect and the age of the infant.
Conclusion. Cleft lip and palate is the most common fa- cial deformity. Environmental and genetic factors are the main reasons for clefts in infants. Treatment is a com- plex and time consuming process, which should exclude experimentation, and treatment - rehabilitation involves a number of specialist doctors, in a specialized and rec- ognized center, who decide the best treatment plan ac- cording to the site of damage and the age of the infant.
KEY WORDS: Cleft lip, jaw, and palate, most common facial deformity, multidisciplinary approach, complex treatment
