Editorial 3, 2021
Athanassios Kyrgidis
The third Editorial of 2021, in the issue you hold in your hands at the dawn of the new year, will begin with wishes for a blessed and creative 2022! On behalf of the editorial board, we wish the read- ers and all the contributors of the journal an even more creative year in which we shall need to learn to live harmoniously with Covid-19 pandemic and we shall be able to return to a new, fully functional daily life!
In the context of this functional daily life, we are called to contribute to the success of the Panhel- lenic Conference of the Hellenic Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (HAOMS), HA- OMS 2022 which will be thematic, keeping the tradition for the within 3-year interim conferences, and will be entitled “Guided Bone Regeneration in Implantology”. I had already mentioned in the previous Editorial that Dr. Dr. L. Goutzanis had been appointed chairman of the organizing com- mittee of HAOMS 2022, the National Conference with International Participation of our Association. Due to his personal obligations, Dr. Dr. L. Gout- zanis resigned from the position of Chairman of the Organizing Committee, remaining a member. The Board of the Hellenic Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery honored me, by proposing me unanimously for the position of President of the organizing committee, a proposal which I ac- cepted.
So, as the chairman of the Organizing Committee of “HAOMS 2022 – Guided Bone Regeneration in Implantology”, together with the other members of the Organizing Committee we take the baton from the highly successful “HAOMS 2020 - Oral Implantology & Facial Aesthetics”, baton that was successfully delivered by previously “HAOMS IM- PLANTS” of 2019, 2017 and 2016, when the title “HAOMS IMPLANTS” was used for the first time for the thematic conferences of our Association. The title “Implantology” established in 2020 versus “Implants” was retained. Implantology is a branch of dental science that deals with the permanent im- plantation and function of dental prostheses in the jaws to restore edentulous patients. The founder of modern implantology, Per-Ingvar Brånemark, had suggested in his original surgical protocol as early as the 1980s that implants need be placed by maxillofacial surgeons. Over the years, implantology is now aimed at a much wider range of physi- cians and dentists and is taught in dental schools at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The medical and dental specialty of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery both due to the initial and long-term in- volvement as well as the surgical experience and knowledge is the most competent at least to of- fer balanced knowledge. Balanced knowledge re- fers to the principles of anatomy of the jawbone, the physiology of bone metabolism, the available biologic and alloplastic materials as well as the proposal for clinical practice based on the best possible scientific evidence. Evidence Based Medi- cine aims to combine the best research data, the doctor’s clinical integrity and the patient’s personal values and expectations. The exponential growth of medical information in combination with new technologies goes beyond the traditional approach of the physician who treats patients with the con- solidated knowledge he received at undergraduate or postgraduate level as the subject of his degree. The goal of the organizing committee of “HA- OMS 2022 - Guided Bone Regeneration in Im- plantology” is to provide participants with a more comprehensive approach to the available bone regeneration techniques in implantology and with knowledge of bone metabolism and bone poros- ity, through teaching by a mix of renowned sci- entists from Greece and abroad. It is especially important that participants become competent to critically appraise this knowledge and any future such that they will acquire, according to the prin- ciples of Evidence Based Medicine.
In the issue you are holding in your hands, seven scientific papers are published as in the previous one. The first three describe original studies while the remaining 4 are case reports.
The first article presents a comparative study of diode and CO2 laser for the treatment of gingival hyperpigmentation from the Dental College and Rajas Hospital, Kavalkinaru, Tiruneleli, India (1). The study is the first of its kind to compare the two laser techniques, and concludes that the di- ode laser group appears to be more effective in treating gingival hyperpigmentation than the CO2 laser. Article number 2 is also original and con- cerns a clinical study for the treatment of heman- giomas of the maxillofacial region in the pediatric population and how these develop or recur with age (2). It was conducted at Mercy Multispecialty Dental Center, Chrompet, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. The third published article is also original and concerns a clinical study comparing and correlating the factors that affect the incidence, intensity and nature of bacteremia in the preoperative, intraop- erative and postoperative period after extraction of impacted third mandibular molars (3). It was also conducted at the Mercy Multispeciality Den- tal Center, Chrompet, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. The fourth article of the issue concerns a case of a patient with oronasal fistula in the anterior re- gion of the mouth that was treated surgically and a literature review is also presented (4). It was prepared by undergraduate students of the Den- tal School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. under the supervision of the Assistant Professor and member of the Editorial Committee of the “Archives”, Dr. Vassilis Petsinis. The engage- ment of new colleagues with writing motivates us to continue to improve this journal as a scientific step for dissemination of medical knowledge. Ar- ticle number 5, also from Chennai, India, describes the case of a 55-year-old man with asymptomatic circular, solitary, lobular swelling of the upper lip that turned out to be a pleiomorphic adenoma (5). Article 6 deals with the rare occurrence of pyogenic granuloma on the dorsal surface of the anterior two thirds of the tongue from the Dental College and Rajas Hospital, Kavalkinaru, Tiruneleli, India (6). Finally, the 7th published work of the is- sue is also a case report that describes a case of ankylosing tongue that was surgically corrected by frenectomy and comes from Chennai, India (7).
I take this opportunity to remind journal reader- ship that the Scientific Committee is unified; there is no separation of members according to their academic - research background, but the country of origin of all members of the committee is mentioned. A new addition is Professor R N Mugun- dan (India).
Closing the 3rd Editorial I would like to thank the Publisher of the “Archives” “Odontiatriko Vima” and in particular Mr. Othonas Gotsis and Mr. Notis Rigas who, despite the increased demands of time and volume of work, coped exemplary and wish them an even more creative year that is a requisite for us, as changes in the field of electronic archiving and cataloging of the magazine are already being developed.
