SUMMARY: Aim: The presentation of a series of cases with atypical head and neck tuberculosis that were characterized by diagnostic difficulties. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of the files of four patients with head and neck tuberculosis was conducted. Results: In order to verify clinical suspicion of tuberculosis, the following tests were undertaken in all cases: tuberculin skin test, Ziehl-Neelsen stain, cultures for mycobacteria and biopsy. These were combined with imaging studies. Biopsy turned out to be the only method, which invariably led to a definitive diagnosis. Conclusions: When there is suspicion for head and neck tuberculosis, biopsy is a valuable diagnostic procedure.
KEY WORDS: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis, submandibular swelling, fistula, histopathological examination.
